Between the ages of 1 and 8

This is intended as  informational purposes only, learned in a complete CPR course instructed by the American Heart Association.  It is to be used only as a guide for CPR.

  1. Check to see if the area is SAFE for you to be there

    2.    Determine if they are conscious by tapping and shouting "Are you OK?"

   3.    If no response call out for HELP! If others are around send them to call 

   4.   Open the airway with a head-tilt chin-lift or jaw-thrust maneuver.

   5.   LOOK-LISTEN-&-FEELING for breaths. For about 5-10 seconds.

    6.   If not breathing normally pinch nose and cover the mouth with yours and blow until you see the chest rise. Give 2 breaths.                                 

   7.   Check for SIGNS of CIRCULATION

   8.   If NO SIGNS of CIRCULATION begin chest compressions.  Place heel of one hand in center of chest.  Push down on the chest 5 times right between the nipples.  Pump at the rate of 100x/minute.

   9.   CONTINUE WITH 1 BREATH AND 5 PUMPS FOR 1 MINUTE OR  UNTIL HELP ARRIVES.

When to Stop CPR

  1. if another trained person takes over CPR for you

  2. if more advanced medical personnel take over

  3. if you are exhausted and unable to continue

  4. if the scene becomes unsafe

  5. if the victim's heart starts beating
